I knew when I booked a trip to Singapore that I had to spend some time at the renowned Singapore Botanic Gardens and the luxurious Orchard Rd. So, I began the search for the perfect crash pad. However, I didn’t just want anywhere to rest my head in this tropical mecca, I wanted an experience (and a little luxury)! My search lead me to perfect mix of funky, modern and stylish with a serious dash of fun when I discovered the wanderlust-worthy, Hotel Jen Tanglin by Shangri-La.
Hotel Jen Tanglin is located downtown at the start of Orchard Road and within minutes from Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO heritage site with one of the biggest collections of orchids. The best part is the hotel strongly caters for the urban adventurer with colourful bicycles that hotel guests can use for free. A bike is the perfect mode of transport to get to the botanic gardens, even if you are coordinately challenged like myself- hey I didn’t die! In fact, the ride is surprisingly relaxed. They also offer a free shuttle bus to the Orchard Road shopping precinct every hour so you can #ShopTillYouDrop
From the outside Hotel Jen Tanglin seems all business, however walking through the entrance you are greeted with sleek and colourful finishes, as well as many kitsch touches.
The check-in desks are perched on top of vintage suitcases and books that look like they are full of tales of adventure. Character and surprises meet you everywhere in the lobby.
Leather swings face reception, wooden finishes meet glossy tiles and personality is injected with a funky café featuring a two-person retro bike as the base of one of the tables. Behind the lobby is a large open plan restaurant area which carries through the theme for fun, balancing a modern space with large walls of bright, colourful artwork, reflective of Singapore life.
The hotel’s chic design carries over to the guest rooms which feature a contemporary feel, incorporating local references such as shophouses, orchids and bicycles. I stayed in a Club Room which featured a very cool bicycle motif on the wall that looked like something Da Vinci might have sketched had he been a downtown Singaporean hipster!
The best part about the club room? The club lounge access that come with the room of course! Who doesn’t love fresh sushi and delish nibbles paired with unlimited wine and beer? Between 4pm-6pm every day there was a drool-worthy array of tasty morsels, inspired by many international flavours and tipples to refresh guests that had braved the heat, to replenish their ambition and taste buds.
Back to the room… turns out I was crashing my head on 300-thread-count linen, which was very soft under the feet when taking these classic ‘jumping on the bed’ pics (because I’m having fun damn it!). I also had a gorgeous window seat in my room with cute pillows encouraging me to take a selfie, the reality is I would have taken 50 anyway!
The views from my room looked out to the Singapore CBD, where I made use of the comfy little bench seat for some people watching and soaking in the glamour of the cosmopolitan city vibe. #stalkermode
Dining & Drinks
There’s four main options for onsite dining:
J65, the all-day dining restaurant reflects Singapore’s multicultural cuisine through its sumptuous buffets and a-la-carte menu. Guests who are in a rush can grab a complimentary takeaway breakfast box and coffee-to-go which is perfect for the time-poor traveller.
Our little fave was the funky Jen’s Kitchen On-the-Go which serves artisanal coffee roasted by a local coffee entrepreneur. It’s also equipped with free fast Wi-Fi, charging stations, computer and printer.
Ah Hoi’s Kitchen offers alfresco dining with authentic Singapore flair and the signature Singapore Chilli Crab comes highly recommended.
Rumpoles Bar is perfect for enjoying creative cocktails (yes that’s plural!), a refreshing Singaporean beer or a night-cap.
Pamper yo’ self at the onsite Essence Vale Spa and release stress with tempting treatments ranging from aromatherapy to deep tissue massages. The spa opens from 10am till 9pm daily, with a variety of therapeutic treatments as well as a sauna, steam bath and indoor whirlpool, perfect for busy business travellers and tired vacationers.
The pool is definitely a part of the hotel you want to spend some time at. After a long day of sightseeing or business meetings, it offers a chic little urban sanctuary. Take a dip or do an easy lap in the 30-metre swimming pool, or just relax in the outdoor whirlpool. Surrounded by lush greenery and comfy sun loungers, it’s the perfect place to chill before getting a sunset drink at the bar.
